He Hung Up On Me

A caller scolded me for charging twice as much as the photographer he'd spoken to that morning, then hung up before I could answer. Here's what I wish I'd gotten to tell him.

The Phone Call

Last week I took a call. He scolded me for having prices twice as much as the headshot photographer he previously spoke to that morning. "Why?!" he demanded.

"That's a wonderful question 😊 First, could you share why you didn't just go with the other photographer who's half my price? And second, after having read my price and process on the website, why did you decide to still call me?"

I think I touched a nerve. He didn't like that very much. He hung up. I was saddened.

What I Wanted to Tell Him

What I wanted to tell him was most people who visit the studio are using their headshots from before the global lockdowns; before they had children; quickly taken in the hallways at their previous job; or taken when they were barely an adult in undergrad.

Everyone Walks In With Something

There's something each person is anxious about, scared shitless about, and I'm uniquely able to help them through it. Maybe they fear age discrimination. Sometimes they feel their weight is an obstacle. Other times they're unsure how the photographer will portray their non binary identity. I've also been told photographers don't light their melanin correctly.

The Human Side of the Craft

Beyond just the technical, I think most photographers forget the human side of the craft. I help my clients feel safe and fully themselves. Feel welcomed and comfortable. Feel heard and seen. And… feel a little bit silly, too. Just ask Yawa 🤪
